Nicki Minaj, one of the biggest superstars at the moment, made her way to the Chicago Theatre for the first stop of her US tour. The show was sold, out and the anticipation had been building since the tour was selling out around the world. Last time Nicki was in Chicago, it was as Britney Spears' opening act for her "Femme Fetale" tour.
2 chainz who is part of Nicki's song "Beez in The Trap" was the opening act. However, I didn't get a chance to see it because we were waiting for Nicki for the meet and greet. The meet and greet itself was short but sweet and as usual, if Nicki is familiar with you it adds to that extra special moment. She truly does remember people by twitter name and that has to do with a lot of the interaction she had with her fans on there. Another great part of the meet and greets is meeting other people that have shared the journey on twitter with her. That's teamminaj for you.
Meeting her was amazing. She knew who I was once I told her my twitter name. She was like "Oh sweetie, how are you?!" She hugged me and started to personalize my laminate. We then took the picture and afterward she said, "Oh let me hug you again sweetie. I hope you enjoy the show!! Thank you so much for coming!:
Like...omg. Those eyes; that smile. It's everything.
The concert itself was amazing. If you went to the "Femme Fatale" tour and compare it to her tour, you can see the stage presence, the confidence that she has built. You could see at the "Femme Fatale" tour that was she was on the brink of something special and now everything is slowly coming together.
She opened up with "Roman's Revenge," which is a great song to hype up the crowd, and continued with "Did It On 'Em," "I Am Your Leader," "Beez in the Trap" (which she brought out 2 Chainz), "Stupid Hoe," "Dance (A$$)," which, after all of this, you were begging to take a breath. It was one after another non stop!
She finally slowed down with "Right By My Side" and went straight to "Moment 4 Life," a song that is very dear to all her fans.
There were a couple of interludes--songs that most people don't know. But it was able to give us a breather.
After that interlude, Nicki came back to do her biggest hit out of this album--"Starships," and the dancing began! She then went into her next single "Pound the Alarm" followed by her two David Guetta hits--"Where Dem Girls At" and "Turn Me On."
After another interlude. Nicki came out to perform her two ballads. Some people weren't feeling it, but if you listen to both "Fireburns" and "Save Me," one can always relate. Those songs are sung with such emotion, you can tell the pain that it must have been to write them.
After one more interlude, her fans got a real treat. If you have been a fan of Nicki since her mix-tapes, then you know it is truly special to hear Nicki perform some of these. Nicki performed "Go Hard," "Sweet Dreams (Remix)," and one of the crowd favorites, "Itty Bitty Piggy." It is truly amazing to see how hyped people get over that song, and it makes me smile knowing how far along she's come.
At the end of the show she performed two other hits--the one where most people heard her first, "Bedrock," and she brought a couple of fans up on stage. Nicki ended with "Superbass" with a sold out crowd screaming and dancing.
Nicki will be back for her arena tour either later this year or the start of next year. Even if you aren't a die hard, but just a fan, it is truly worth seeing Nicki in concert. There was never a dull moment, and it is fantastic to see all ages and races singing and dancing.
